Kids’ rooms can go ignored when they are out of sight. Pieces and parts of games and toys get mixed in with trash and dirty clothes. It can be hard to keep up when little hands are always going behind you and undoing what you’ve already done! Another problem with kids’ rooms is that the décor can become outdated. Children grow so fast and their interests evolve with them. Those baby ducks may be outdated by the time you child hits one. So, updating their room and giving it a new organizational make-over may be in order. Use these helpful hints to get your child’s room organized, updated, and easier to straighten up when the time comes.
1) If it’s time to update, then you’re in luck. Using movie or cartoon characters can motivate your child to participate in the organization. For example, they may ignore your laundry basket, but love that hamper with their favorite character on it! You can get static cling wall stickers to decorate the room without repainting. You can use buckets and bins to help get things together. Put stickers of the character on the bins to help motivate your child to actually use them. This is an inexpensive way to encourage your child, expand the theme of the room, and make everything come together.
2) Make sure that you purchase the right sized bins and baskets for the items that need to be stored. To start out, clean the room the best that you can. Separate all of those action figures, doll accessories, cards, game pieces, and blocks into separate piles. This will give you a good idea of what size containers you need, which ones need lids, and how many to purchase. Write down your measurements of each pile so that you get a container big enough, but not too big. You don’t want it to take up any unnecessary space.
3) Plan for a system that will work for your child. Having a lot of bins stacked up with lids may sound great and look organized for about an hour! Lids actually encourage children to get the toys out. They want to open the container and dump everything to get to the toys. Using open containers that are wider than they are deep will help them to realize that they can see what’s in there without dumping things out.
4) Use shelving or tables to organize the bins. You can divide the room into a reading area, a baby doll area, a building area, and an arts and crafts area. Put the containers into the corners of the room that correspond with the station, and they are way more likely to stay in that area. Then, if they do get dumped out, they shouldn’t get as scattered and it’s much easier for your child to get them put back away.
5) Organize the closet so that you can keep some things out of reach, and possibly get rid of that bulky dresser. You can even get children’s hangers that have your child’s favorite characters on them if you want to teach them to hang up their clothes. Use small infant hangers or baby hangers so that they are easy to handle and won’t damage their clothes. When your child’s room is spruced up and in order, it’ll be a more productive area and a joy to play in.
