They bring so much to our lives, give us hope, teach us patience, and show us what love really is. But parenting is often romanticized on TV and in our own minds. It’s not all flowers and rainbows! It comes with a lot of pressure, responsibility, and stress.

Parenting can make you feel isolated and alone. All of your parenting decisions are your own. It’s up to you to get it right. That alone can cause many parents to have a constant level of underlying stress. The guilt of making mistakes, the second guessing whether or not you’ve made the right decisions, and the general focus on another person instead of yourself can cause your stress levels to rise.

Studies show that parents have higher stress levels than non-parents. Single parents have even higher levels, and so do parents of adult children. Surprisingly, the parents worry more and have more stress about their children after they are all grown up!

Needless to say, managing stress should be a priority in all parents’ lives. The first problem that researchers say we should take care of is isolation. Families are often off at work and not spending all day with each other. We don’t have time to sit and talk with other parents in the family, neighbors and friends. Being rushed and wishing you were somewhere else adds a lot of stress to your life.

Create a social network of people who support you. It can be just a minute or two a day. Use social networking sites, your cell phone, whatever you can to connect with other parents. Talk about parenting and the mistakes that you’ve made. Sometimes getting that “bad Mom moment” off of your chest allows you to look at it more logically. Hearing about other parents’ mistakes makes you realize that you’re not alone. Being part of a network of friends that listen without judging and help each other grow is an important step in handling stress long term.

The next step is to get the things that you can control under control. Time management and organization are a parent’s best friends! Following a regular cleaning routine can actually be therapeutic and as stress reducing as yoga or other relaxation techniques. Some parents play classical music and relax as they clean and others play dance music and get some exercise in while doing their daily chores. The kids can get involved and cleaning time can actually become family time.

Getting things organized so that your day runs more smoothly will help you to manage stress and prepare you for dealing with bigger issues as they arise. Get the kids involved in keeping their own rooms organized as well. Offer rewards instead of punishments. Make it easy for them by supplying them with labeled containers, a laundry basket, a waste basket, and other child-friendly items. Little hands work better with <a href="http://www.onlykidshangers.com"title="Infant Hangers">infant hangers, baby hangers, or <a href="http://www.onlykidshangers.com"title="Children's Hangers">children’s hangers. Make everything accessible for them and brag on every little thing that they do to help you manage your stress levels.

Remember to take a little time for yourself and work stress management techniques into your day. Having children can add some stress to your life, but it also adds a lot of positivity! Concentrate on your successes, reward yourself, and enjoy having children in your life.

It is so hard to stay organized when you’re a parent, but it may quickly become a necessity in your life. Parents juggle a myriad of responsibilities and deal with endless unplanned occurrences. If you’re not organized, it can quickly become overwhelming. You and your family will suffer if you do not figure out a way to keep your house and life in order. Use these quick tips to get the basics down, hopefully making your life and home run more smoothly.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, then it is important to take a step, even if it is a small one, towards organization. Just one small change can alter your outlook and make things easier to handle. Parents learn quickly to take things one step at a time or it can all be too much to deal with.

Let’s take an example of a problem that may come up and a quick solution that you can use as a preemptive strike. Prepare for some of those unexpected emergencies so that when they happen you can focus on your child. Prepare a tote bag of emergency items that you would want if you were to need to go to the emergency room. With small children, they often need to stay for observation for a long time. Be prepared with this emergency bag. Hang it in the closet so that you can grab it and go at a moment’s notice.

In the bag, you should place things that you and your baby may need. A spare cell phone charger is a great thing to have so that you can call friends and family if you need to. Clean pajamas for you and the baby are good to have in case you end up spending the night. A baby blanket and stuffed animal that your baby will recognize are also comforting. Books and small toys that can be easily played with from a hospital bed should be in the bag. Put some overnight items that you may need into the bag as well. Contact case and solution if you wear contacts, a toothbrush and toothpaste, facial cleanser, medications that you take daily, and anything else that you think you may need. You can keep this bag in a closet or in the trunk of your car so that when an emergency arises, you are prepared.

Make a schedule to keep your daily life running more smoothly. Designate a certain day for certain chores so that they are not constantly weighing down on you. Set a certain date to pay all of your bills so that you’re not missing deadlines. Get your closets organized in a way that everyone can easily find what they need. Hang the baby’s clothes on <a href="http://www.onlykidshangers.com"title="Infant Hangers">infant hangers or <a href="http://www.onlykidshangers.com"title="Children's Hangers">children’s hangers so that they don’t take up much space or stretch out the clothes. Using baby hangers will leave room in the closet for blankets, diapers and other baby needs.

Once you are prepared for emergencies and get your daily life organized, you can concentrate on your family and not all of the things that it takes to keep up with them.

Dealing with inappropriate or attention seeking- behaviors is a tough one, and it takes some time to master. Young children don’t differentiate between negative attention and positive attention, a concept that is extremely difficult for adults to grasp. But, think of it on a primal or biological level. Children’s bodies produce human growth hormone (HGH) when they receive attention. It is overly exciting to them to get attention and causes them to be happy, healthy, and surprisingly, to grow. It doesn’t matter if the attention is positive or negative, they need it to survive.

Pick a day that you will start and make sure that you have time to follow through for as long as it will take. Remember that they are young and try to quickly redirect their attention if they start misbehaving. If they persist, then follow these steps.

Turn your back and make sure that you show no emotion or reaction. Punishments, warnings, and even a glance can reinforce the attention-seeking behavior. Make sure that you don’t have your eyes on the child and that no part of you is touching them or even aimed slightly towards them. The first time you do this, you will probably get quite a show!

Make sure that your child stays safe. The child will have to test your boundaries to determine how big of a commotion they will need to cause the next time to get that growth hormone rush and satisfaction. So, be prepared to stick to your guns. Don’t give in or you just taught them that they need to go to extremes to get your attention.

As soon as they stop, even if it’s for a second, turn around and praise them for stopping the behavior. If they begin again, quickly turn your back again. When they stop again, hug them, hold both of their hands, pick them up, whatever you can do to get that hormone flowing! Repeat over and over how you’re so proud of them for being so good/nice/big/etc. You want them to be satisfied by the positive reinforcement that was the result of positive behavior.

It usually only takes a few times to completely extinguish a behavior, even for children with disabilities, learning disorders and behavioral problems.

This is a two-pronged approach. Remember, you’re not teaching them that a specific behavior is wrong; you’re teaching them to seek out positive attention instead of negative. Spend about 10 minutes deliberately giving them positive attention, every hour. If you don’t plan it, it can easily be missed due to household and personal responsibilities.

Use your time together to teach your child responsibility, too. Utilize the good feelings that you create and have the child associate that feeling with accomplishing tasks. This will help to love learning, work to finish things and to want to succeed. Have them organize toys in separate bins, hugging and cheering every time a toy goes in. Teach them something that they can be proud of, like folding wash cloths or hanging shirts on <a href="http://www.onlykidshangers.com"title="Baby Hangers">baby hangers and infant hangers. Make sure that they can be successful, and if they’re not, praise them for trying.

Once you have a system for dealing with negative behaviors and your child associates attention with positive ones, parenting will be a lot more fulfilling and a positive experience for you and your child.
